When is the best time to underseal your vehicle?
We get asked this constantly: 'is now a good time to get it undersealed?' The honest answer is that timing matters more than people think — both for how well the job goes on and how long it lasts.
The best window: late summer to early autumn
August through October is ideal. The chassis has had a dry summer to shed most of the moisture it picked up over winter, the roads are salt-free, and the coating gets several dry months to cure fully before it has to do any real work. Book in during this window and your vehicle goes into winter with a fresh, fully hardened coating rather than one that's still settling in.
Why mid-winter is the worst time
Underseal needs a genuinely dry, degreased chassis to bond properly. In December and January the underside of most Irish vehicles is permanently wet or salt-caked from driving, and even after a wash it can take longer to dry out fully in a cold workshop. Apply underseal over a chassis that's still damp underneath the surface and you can trap moisture against the steel — which defeats the whole purpose.
What we do differently
- Full pressure wash and degrease before any coating goes on
- Steam clean to lift salt and grime out of seams and box sections
- Vehicle dried properly in the workshop, not rushed
- Applied in a heated spray booth, not outdoors

New vehicle or new-to-you vehicle
If you've just bought something — a van for work, a 4x4 for the farm, a camper for weekends — the best time to underseal it is now, whatever the season, rather than waiting for 'the right time' that never comes. A vehicle sitting untreated through even one winter picks up damage that's cheaper to prevent than repair later.
Annual top-ups
Whatever season you first get it done, mark the date and plan a light top-up spray every year or two after that, particularly on vans and 4x4s covered in detail on /van-underseal-ireland and /4x4-underseal-ireland. A quick annual pass keeps the original coating working at full strength for far longer than leaving it alone until it visibly fails.
