Land Cruiser chassis rust — the full Irish owner's guide

Toyota built the Land Cruiser to last forever. The chassis, unfortunately, wasn't built for Irish salt roads. Here's what every 90/95/100/120 owner should know.

Why Cruisers rot in Ireland

The factory underseal is thin and cracks with age. Once salt water gets between the underseal and the steel, the chassis rusts from the inside out — often looking fine on the surface until the mechanic pokes a screwdriver through it.

Where to look first (in this order)

  • Rear chassis rails behind the back wheels — near-universal rot spot
  • Outriggers — the cross-members that hold the body to the chassis
  • Rear spring hangers and shackle mounts
  • Front chassis rails around the steering box
  • Body mounts — especially the rear-most pair

What a proper Cruiser chassis save looks like

At Rayco we lift the vehicle, pressure wash the entire underside, cut out any rotten steel, MIG weld new sections to NCT standard, then cavity wax and spray-underseal the whole chassis. Done properly, a Cruiser saved at 200,000km will comfortably do another 200,000.

When it's too late

Honest truth: if the chassis rails are paper-thin along their full length, replacement or a donor chassis is cheaper than repair. We'll tell you straight after the free check — no hard sell.

Prevention

A Cruiser that's still solid needs one thing: a proper full underseal now, and a top-up every 3–4 years. That alone will add 15 years to the chassis.
