NCT rust failure — exactly what to do next
Failed the NCT on corrosion? Don't panic — 90% of the rust failures we see in Wexford are fixable in one workshop visit. Here's how to sort it fast.
1. Read the fail sheet properly
The tester writes exactly what failed — sill, chassis rail, outrigger, floor pan, subframe mount. Take a photo of the sheet before you leave the NCT centre. That tells any chassis shop exactly where to look first.
2. Book a proper inspection — don't guess
A body shop that hasn't looked at the vehicle will quote you rubbish. Get it on a ramp with someone who welds chassis every day. Rayco does a free chassis check — WhatsApp the fail sheet plus photos to 087 919 2193.
3. Understand what's repairable
- Surface rust on chassis rails — cut out and weld new plate to NCT standard
- Outriggers rotted through — fabricate and weld new sections
- Sills — cut, weld, seal, prime and paint
- Floor pan holes — patch weld with correct gauge steel
- Subframe mounts — reinforce or replace section
4. Fix it, underseal it, re-test it
A proper repair means welding to the correct gauge, seam-sealing, priming, painting AND undersealing the repair. Skip any of those steps and the tester will fail it again. Rayco does all four under one roof.
5. Bring the paperwork to the re-test
Photos of the repair before underseal, plus a receipt from the shop, help the re-test go smoothly.
