New vs Older Vehicle Underseal
The job looks the same from the outside, but what a new car needs and what an older vehicle needs are very different pieces of work.
On a new or nearly-new vehicle, underseal is purely preventative — the metal is sound, so the job is a clean, quick coating that stops road salt and stone chips ever getting a foothold. On an older vehicle that's already spent years on Irish roads, there's usually existing corrosion to deal with first: cutting out rust, welding in sound steel, and treating what's left before any coating goes on. Skipping that step and coating over rust just seals moisture in and speeds up the damage underneath.
Side by side
| Factor | New / Nearly New | Older Vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Starting condition | Sound factory steel, no rust | Often has surface or structural rust |
| Prep required | Clean and degrease only | Rust cut-out, welding where needed |
| Time on ramp | Half a day typically | 1-3 days depending on welding required |
| Cost driver | Coating and labour only | Welding and steel replacement adds cost |
| Goal | Prevent corrosion starting | Stop existing corrosion and restore strength |
| Best timing | Within first year or two of ownership | As soon as rust or NCT flags appear |
Which should you choose?
If your vehicle is new or under a few years old, book preventative underseal now — it's the cheapest and most effective time to do it, before any corrosion starts. If it's older, has failed an NCT/DOE on rust, or you can see flaking or bubbling underneath, you need an inspection first: welding and rust repair have to happen before any coating is worth applying. Rayco assess every vehicle on the ramp and tell you honestly which category yours falls into.
FAQs
Is it worth underseal a brand new car?
Yes — it's the cheapest time to protect the chassis, before road salt gets a chance to start any corrosion.
Can you underseal a car that's already rusted?
Yes, but rust needs to be cut out and welded first. Coating over active rust traps moisture and makes it worse.
How do I know if my older car needs welding first?
Book a free inspection — we'll show you photos of any corrosion and quote welding separately if needed.
