Wax vs Oil-Based Underseal
Wax coatings and bitumen/rubberised underseal work very differently. Here's the honest trade-off between the two — no marketing spin.
Wax-based coatings (like Waxoyl) stay soft, are cheap to apply and "self-heal" when scratched because the wax flows back over the exposed metal. The trade-off is that wax migrates and thins out over time, so it needs reapplying every year or two, especially in areas hit by road spray. Bitumen or rubberised underseal cures into a tough, durable skin that resists stone chips and lasts far longer without attention — but it must go over sound, properly prepped bare steel, because sealing a coating over existing rust or moisture just traps it underneath and makes things worse.
