How long does undersealing actually last?
There's no single answer to 'how long will this last', because three things decide it: what product was used, how well the vehicle was prepped beforehand, and how many miles and winters it does afterwards. Here's how each of those plays out in practice.
Product type makes a big difference
- Wax-based products (Waxoyl-type): soft, self-healing but thin — typically 1-2 winters before it needs redoing on a daily-driven car
- Lanolin-based products: good for cavities, but generally need reapplying yearly
- Heavy-duty rubberised underbody with cavity wax (what we use): 5-7 years on a well-maintained vehicle
Prep quality decides whether it bonds at all
Underseal sprayed straight over old grime, loose rust scale or a damp chassis will start lifting within months, no matter how good the product is. Proper prep means a full pressure wash, degrease, and drying the underside completely before anything gets sprayed. Skip that step and you're wasting the product.
Mileage and driving conditions
A vehicle doing motorway miles that dry off quickly will generally hold its coating longer than one doing short, salty, wet-road journeys every day. Farm vehicles and 4x4s that pick up stone damage from tracks and lanes also wear through coating faster on the chassis rails and sills, which is worth knowing if you run something covered on /4x4-underseal-ireland.
Annual top-ups extend everything
Even the best 5-7 year coating benefits from a light inspection and top-up spray every year, particularly on the leading edges and low points that take the most abuse. It's a fraction of the cost of the original job and it resets the clock on the areas that wear fastest.
