Undersealing vs rustproofing — the difference
People use 'underseal' and 'rustproofing' interchangeably, and workshops don't always explain the difference clearly. They're two different jobs that protect two different parts of the vehicle, and doing only one leaves a gap.
Undersealing — the outside
Undersealing is a heavy-duty rubberised coating applied to the visible, exposed underside of the vehicle — the chassis rails, floor pan, wheel arches and subframe. It's sprayed on so it can be built up in thick, even coats, and it acts as a physical and impact-resistant barrier against stone chips, road spray and standing water.
Rustproofing / cavity injection — the inside
Rustproofing usually refers to injecting a wax or oil-based fluid into enclosed cavities — box sections, sills, door bottoms, chassis rail interiors — where a spray gun aimed at the outside can never reach. These cavities trap condensation and salt-laden water on their inner walls, and that's exactly where rust often starts, invisibly, years before it shows through on the outside.
Why you need both, not one or the other
- Undersealing without cavity treatment leaves the inside of box sections and rails completely unprotected
- Cavity treatment without undersealing leaves the exposed steel open to stone chips and abrasion that wear a soft wax coating away fast
- Together, they cover the vehicle from both sides of the same steel
How this plays out on real vehicles
On a Land Cruiser or Hilux chassis, for example, the rails are box-section steel — exactly the shape that needs cavity wax pumped through drilled access points, combined with rubberised underseal on the outside faces.
