DIY vs Professional Underseal
A tin of underseal and an afternoon on the driveway isn't worthless — but it isn't the same job. Here's exactly where the difference lies.
We'll be straight with you: if your chassis is clean and you just want a light seasonal top-up on the visible underbody, DIY is a genuinely sensible thing to do. A few hours with the car on ramps, a pressure wash, a proper dry-out and a wax coating will do more good than nothing at all. Where DIY falls down is everything you can't see — the inside of box sections, chassis rails and sills, which is exactly where Irish chassis rot from. Those need cavity injection equipment with flexible lances and a compressor, and no aerosol can substitute for it. It also falls down on prep: coating over damp or scaling steel seals the moisture in and accelerates the corrosion you were trying to stop.
Side by side
| Factor | DIY | Professional (Rayco) |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | €40-€120 in materials, plus your weekend | €350-€650 depending on vehicle and condition |
| Prep | Hose and wire brush; hard to fully dry a chassis outdoors | Pressure wash, degrease, scale removal, dried in the workshop |
| Box sections and sills | Not reachable — this is where rot starts | Cavity wax injected through every box section |
| Rust already present | Gets coated over and hidden | Cut out and MIG welded to sound steel first |
| Coverage | Missed spots are normal lying on your back | Vehicle up on a ramp, full underside visible |
| Lifespan | One season to two years | Up to 7 years, with a written warranty |
| Best for | Light top-ups on an already-sound chassis | Anything driven year-round on salted Irish roads |
Which should you choose?
Do it yourself if the vehicle is young, the chassis is sound, and you're topping up between professional treatments. Get it done properly if there's any existing rust, if it's a 4x4, van, camper or anything used commercially, or if you want protection that survives more than a winter. If you're unsure which camp you're in, send us photos of the underside — we'll tell you honestly, and if it only needs a DIY top-up we'll say so.
FAQs
Can I underseal my own car and still get a warranty?
No — our warranty covers work carried out in our own workshop, because it depends on the prep, welding and cavity injection being done to our standard.
Is DIY underseal ever a bad idea?
Yes, if there is existing rust or trapped moisture. Sealing over corroding steel hides it and lets it spread out of sight.
What do I need to do DIY properly?
Ramps or axle stands, a pressure washer, a genuinely dry chassis, wire brushing back to sound metal, and a wax product for exposed areas only.
Can you finish a DIY job I started?
Yes. We'll strip back what's needed, weld anything structural, and apply the full system properly. Send photos first so we can quote accurately.
