Rust Prevention Ireland
Prevention is the cheapest chassis work you will ever pay for. Protect the underside before the salt and standing water get their start.
In short
- Irish conditions — damp most of the year, salted roads in winter, coastal air — corrode steel faster than most of Europe.
- Protecting a sound underside costs a fraction of cutting and welding a rotten one later.
- Prevention works best on newer vehicles and on vehicles that have just had rust repair done.
- Send WhatsApp photos of the underside to 087 919 2193 and we'll tell you honestly what the vehicle needs before you travel to the yard.
Why Irish vehicles rust early
Water rarely gets a chance to dry off an Irish underbody. Add road salt through the winter and grit packed into box sections, and steel stays wet long enough to corrode from the inside out.
By the time rust shows on the outside of a chassis rail, the metal behind it is already thin. That is why the visible patch is almost never the whole job.
What prevention involves
- Full underbody wash and degrease
- Drying so coating goes onto clean, dry steel
- Cavity and box section treatment where access allows
- Protective coating across chassis, floor and arches
- Drain holes left clear so water still escapes
- Photos of the finished underside
When to do it
The best time is before the first winter — a new or nearly-new vehicle has clean steel and the coating bonds properly. The second-best time is right after any welding or rust repair, while the underside is already stripped and accessible.
Every repair, step by step
- Vehicle on the ramp for a full underbody assessment
- Underside washed, degreased and dried before anything is applied
- Loose scale and flaking old coatings scraped back
- Any structural corrosion flagged before coating goes on
- Cavities and box sections treated where access allows
- Coating applied evenly to chassis, floor and arches
- Drain holes kept clear so water can still escape
- Photos of the finished underside sent before collection

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth rustproofing a new vehicle?
Yes — clean steel is the ideal surface to protect, and it is far cheaper than repairing corrosion in five years' time.
How often should it be redone?
We check the underside annually and top up any areas that have been stone-chipped or scraped. Most vehicles need very little each year.
Does prevention help a vehicle that already has surface rust?
Yes, once the rust is cleaned back and treated first. Coating straight over corrosion traps moisture.
How much does it cost?
See our underseal cost guide for typical ranges, or WhatsApp photos to 087 919 2193 for a price on your vehicle.
