Can a rusted chassis be repaired?

Yes — in most cases a rusted chassis can be repaired. Corroded sections are cut out and replaced with new steel welded in place. Repair becomes uneconomic only when corrosion has spread through the majority of the main structure.

What is repairable

• Perforated rail sections
• Rotten outriggers and body mounts
• Corroded crossmembers and tow points
• Failed spring hangers and shackle mounts
• Sills, jacking points and floor pans

What is not

A frame that is thin along its whole length, with several collapsed crossmembers and mounts pulling out of soft steel, is a rebuild rather than a repair. In that situation we will say so rather than take the job on.

How the decision is made

On the ramp, with the underside cleaned back, a hammer and a scraper. Sound steel rings; rotten steel gives. Old coatings get scraped where needed, because rust hides underneath them. Photos of the cut-out and the finished weld go to you before anything is coated.
