Rusted Chassis Repair Ireland

If a screwdriver goes through it, plating over it will not do. We remove rotten chassis steel entirely and rebuild the section properly.

In short

  • A rusted chassis is repaired by removing every bit of perforated steel and welding in a newly fabricated section.
  • Rust usually spreads further than it looks — the visible hole is the end of the process, not the start.
  • Repair is generally worthwhile when the corrosion is confined to sections rather than the full length of the rails.
  • Send WhatsApp photos of the affected area to 087 919 2193 and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a repair worth doing before you travel to the yard.

Rust is always bigger than it looks

Chassis rot starts on the inside of box sections where mud and water sit. By the time it breaks through to the outside, the surrounding steel is already thin. That is why a fifty-cent-sized hole often becomes a foot of replacement rail once we start cutting.

We would rather show you that on the ramp with photos than surprise you with it on the invoice, so we assess and quote before work starts.

Typical rotten areas we rebuild

  • Rear chassis rails behind the axle
  • Rear crossmembers and tow points
  • Outriggers and body mount brackets
  • Spring hangers and shackle mounts
  • Chassis sections above and around the fuel tank cradle
  • Inner sill and jacking point areas

When repair stops making sense

We will always tell you if a chassis is past economic repair. Warning signs are perforation along most of the rail length, multiple collapsed crossmembers and mounts that have torn out of soft steel. In those cases the honest answer is that the money is better spent elsewhere.

What the job involves

Every repair, step by step

  • Vehicle on the ramp — full underbody assessment and photos
  • Corroded steel cut back to clean, solid metal
  • Repair sections fabricated from correct-gauge steel
  • MIG welded, dressed back and checked for full penetration
  • Seams sealed to keep water out of the joint
  • Primed and painted before any coating goes on
  • Underbody protection applied over the finished repair
  • Photos of the work sent to you before collection

Frequently asked questions

Can a rotten chassis be saved?

Often, yes. If the rot is in sections rather than the whole rail, those sections can be cut out and rebuilt in new steel.

Is it legal to weld a chassis in Ireland?

Repairing corroded chassis sections by welding is standard accepted repair practice, provided the work restores the original strength and is done to a proper standard.

Why does the repair get bigger once you start?

Because corrosion works from the inside out. We cut until we reach sound metal — stopping short would leave rust under the new steel.

Do you photograph the work?

Yes. We send photos of the cut-out and the finished weld before coating goes on, so you can see exactly what was done.

What happens after the welding?

The section is seam-sealed, primed, painted and coated with underbody protection.
