Chassis welding for Jeeps and 4x4s: what to expect

Jeeps and ladder-frame 4x4s corrode in a predictable pattern: outriggers, rear rails behind the axle, the rear crossmember, spring hangers and body mounts. Repair means cutting those sections out and rebuilding them in matching gauge steel.

Why 4x4s suffer

A ladder frame is a set of box sections, and off-road or rural use packs them with mud. Mud holds water against the inside of the steel for weeks, so the frame rots from the inside while the outside still looks solid.

The usual repair list

  • Outriggers — front, middle and rear
  • Rear chassis rails and crossmember
  • Spring hangers and shackle mounts
  • Body mount brackets
  • Fuel tank cradle mounts
  • Sills and footwells

What a job looks like

Ramp inspection and photos first, then cutting back to sound metal, fabricating sections, welding, dressing, sealing, painting and coating. Timescales depend entirely on how many sections are involved — a single outrigger is short work, a full set is not.

Worth doing?

Usually yes. These vehicles stay useful and hold value, so rebuilding sections is normally far cheaper than replacing the vehicle.
