Common causes of chassis corrosion in Ireland

Chassis corrosion in Ireland comes down to four causes: road salt, water that cannot drain, mud packed into box sections, and protective coatings that have failed. Nearly every chassis repair we see traces back to at least one of them.
1. Road salt
Salt does not corrode steel by itself — it speeds up the reaction between steel, water and oxygen. Winter gritting puts salt spray onto every surface underneath a vehicle, and it stays there until it is washed off.
2. Water that cannot drain
Every box section has drain holes. Blocked with mud, leaves or old underseal, they stop working, the section fills, and the steel sits in water indefinitely.
3. Packed mud
Mud is the worst of the lot on rural and farm vehicles. It holds moisture against the steel for days or weeks after the road has dried, and it hides the corrosion while it happens.
4. Failed coatings
Cracked, flaking underseal is worse than no underseal. Water gets behind it, cannot evaporate, and the panel rots quietly while the surface still looks black and sound.
What actually helps
- Rinse the underside after driving salted roads
- Keep drain holes clear
- Jet wash mud out of chassis rails on working vehicles
- Check coatings annually and repair any cracking
- Treat inside box sections, not just the outside
