Do new cars need undersealing?

We get this question a lot from people who've just bought something new or nearly new: 'surely a modern car doesn't need undersealing?' The honest answer is more nuanced than yes or no.

Factory coatings have genuinely improved

Manufacturers galvanise more panels than they used to, use better cataphoretic e-coat primers, and apply some form of underbody protection as standard on most new vehicles. Compared to a 1990s car rolling off the line with almost nothing on the chassis, today's factory protection is a real step up.

But it's still thin and patchy

Factory underbody coatings are applied fast, at scale, to a cost target. They're often thinner than an aftermarket application, and coverage can be inconsistent around welds, seams and box section openings — exactly the spots most vulnerable to rust starting. We regularly see 3-4 year old vehicles with early corrosion starting at these missed spots, well before the rest of the underside shows any wear at all.

The best value window: 0-2 years old

• The chassis is still completely clean and free of any existing corrosion
• A protective coating applied now bonds to sound, undamaged steel
• You're adding to the factory protection rather than trying to save a chassis that's already started rotting
• It's the cheapest point in the vehicle's life to do it — no rust cutting or welding required first

Waiting until problems show up costs more

Once a new vehicle has done a few Irish winters unprotected, any rust that's started at those thin factory spots needs to be dealt with before a fresh coating goes on — otherwise you're sealing rust in rather than sealing it out.
