10 signs your chassis is rotting

Chassis rust rarely announces itself with a bang. It builds quietly underneath the vehicle for years before it shows up as an NCT advisory, a strange noise, or in the worst cases a genuine safety failure. Here are the ten signs we tell customers to watch for.

The ten signs

• 1. Flaking, scaly rust on chassis rails — surface rust that's started lifting is already past the 'just cosmetic' stage
• 2. Soft or spongy spots when you press the sill or floor pan by hand
• 3. The screwdriver test — gentle pressure with a flat screwdriver on a suspect area goes through rather than resists
• 4. Rust-coloured streaks running down from seams or spot welds
• 5. Corrosion visible around brake lines and fuel lines running along the chassis
• 6. Bubbling paint or underseal that's lifted away from the metal underneath it
• 7. A rattle or knock from underneath that wasn't there before — often a sign a mounting point is weakening
• 8. Visible daylight through a chassis rail or sill from underneath
• 9. An NCT or MOT advisory mentioning corrosion, even a minor one — it rarely stays minor
• 10. A musty, damp smell inside the cabin near the floor, which can point to rot in the floor pan letting moisture in

Why the screwdriver test matters

A light push should meet resistance from solid steel. If the tip sinks in or pushes straight through scaly rust, that's not surface corrosion anymore — the steel has lost structural thickness. Brake line corrosion is a safety issue, not just a rust issue

Rusted brake lines running along the chassis or inside the sills can weaken and eventually fail. If you see rust on the lines themselves, get it checked immediately rather than waiting for a scheduled service — this isn't something to leave for later.
