Three stages of corrosion — and what each needs
- Surface rust: clean back, treat and coat
- Scale and pitting: mechanically remove, assess remaining thickness, treat and coat
- Perforation: cut out and weld in new steel
- Structural loss: rebuild the section to original profile and gauge
Preparation is most of the work
Any coating applied over loose scale, damp mud or flaking old underseal will fail. The vehicle is washed, degreased and cleaned back so the coating bonds to sound metal rather than to rust.
Old, cracked underseal is one of the biggest culprits we see. Water gets behind it, cannot dry out, and the panel rots quietly underneath while the surface still looks black and healthy.
Stopping it coming back
Once repair and treatment are done, the underside is coated and box sections can be treated with cavity protection so the inside of the steel is protected as well as the outside. Corrosion control is ongoing maintenance, not a one-off event — an annual look underneath catches problems while they are still cheap.

Frequently asked questions
Can corrosion be stopped without welding?
Surface corrosion, yes — cleaned back, treated and coated. Once steel has perforated or lost structural thickness, welding is the only proper fix.
Is a rust converter enough?
Not on its own for structural areas. Converters have a place on light surface rust, but they do not restore lost metal thickness.
How often should I check underneath?
Once a year is sensible in Ireland, and after any winter of heavy salt use. Catching corrosion early is far cheaper than welding later.
Do you treat inside box sections?
Cavity treatment can be applied to box sections so the inside surface is protected as well as the outside.
