What counts as structural

Anything that carries load or holds a safety-critical component is structural: chassis rails and box sections, outriggers, crossmembers, suspension and subframe mounts, seatbelt anchorage areas, spring hangers and towing points.

These areas are also the ones an NCT tester examines most closely, because corrosion there changes how a vehicle behaves in a crash or under load.

Why gauge and profile matter

Welding thin sheet over a rotten chassis rail is not a repair — it changes where load is carried and creates a stress point at the edge of the plate. Matching the original steel thickness and shape keeps the load path where the manufacturer intended it.

Where a section has an internal strengthener or a closed box profile, it has to be rebuilt the same way rather than left as an open channel.
