Local conditions in Cork
West Cork's coastal roads and constant damp are among the hardest conditions in the country for underbody steel.
What undersealing actually does
Undersealing puts a protective barrier between the underside of your vehicle and everything Irish roads throw at it — water, road salt, grit, mud and slurry. It does not reverse existing corrosion, but on sound steel it stops moisture sitting directly against the metal, which is what starts the process in the first place.
The value of it depends almost entirely on the preparation. Coating applied over wet mud or loose scale traps moisture underneath and does more harm than good, which is why the underside is cleaned back and dried before anything is sprayed.
How the job is carried out
The underside is cleaned back, dried and inspected first, then the protective coating is applied to the chassis, floor pan, sills, arches and mounting points, with cavity sections treated where access allows.
Brake components, exhaust sections, driveshafts and heat-sensitive areas are masked off, and drain holes are kept clear so water can still escape rather than pooling behind the coating.
When to underseal
Autumn, before the gritters go out, is the most useful time — the coating is in place before the worst of the salt. A new or low-mileage vehicle is the easiest to protect because the steel is still clean. Older vehicles can still be treated, but any corrosion that has already gone through needs cutting out and welding first.
What gets treated
- Chassis rails and box sections
- Floor pans and inner sills
- Wheel arches and arch liners
- Suspension and subframe mounts
- Seams, jacking points and drain areas
- Cavity sections where access allows

Cork undersealing FAQs
Do you underseal vehicles from Cork?
Yes — vehicles come to the Rayco yard from Cork and the surrounding counties. Send photos on WhatsApp to 087 919 2193 with the year, make and model and we'll price it before you travel.
Can you underseal a vehicle that already has rust?
Surface scale can be cleaned back and treated. Where steel has gone through, that section is cut out and welded first — coating over rot only hides it.
How long does undersealing take?
It depends on the size of the vehicle and how much cleaning and drying the underside needs. We give you a realistic timeframe with the quote.
Is undersealing worth it on a newer vehicle?
A newer vehicle is the easiest to protect, because the steel is still clean and the coating goes onto sound metal rather than over existing corrosion.
