Local conditions in Cork

West Cork's coastal roads and constant damp are among the hardest conditions in the country for underbody steel.

How a chassis repair is assessed

A chassis repair starts with finding the real extent of the corrosion, not just the hole you can see. Surface scale can be cleaned back and treated; steel that has lost thickness has to come out. Box sections are the awkward part, because they rot from the inside and only show on the outside once the metal is already thin.

Send photos of the affected area along with the year, make and model, and we can usually tell you whether you are looking at a small localised patch or a larger section repair before you travel.

What a repair involves

Corroded steel is cut away until sound metal is reached, replacement sections are formed in correct-gauge steel and welded in, then the joins are dressed back. Where the original section carried load, the replacement is made to match it rather than plated over.

Every repaired section is dressed back, seam-sealed, primed, painted and coated with underbody protection before the vehicle leaves the yard.

Repair or replace?

Not every chassis is worth repairing, and we will say so. Where corrosion is localised to rails, outriggers, crossmembers or mounts, a sectional repair is usually the sensible option. Where the frame has gone through in multiple areas, we will tell you honestly rather than take on work that will not last.

Cork chassis repair FAQs

Do you repair chassis for vehicles from Cork?

Yes — customers travel to the Rayco yard from Cork and the surrounding counties. Send photos on WhatsApp to 087 919 2193 and we will price the job before you make the trip.

How do I know if my chassis needs repair or just protection?

If the steel is solid and only surface-scaled, cleaning and coating is usually enough. If a screwdriver goes through it, or the section flexes, it needs cutting out and welding. Photos let us give you an honest view.

Can you repair a chassis that failed the NCT on corrosion?

Yes. Send the fail sheet with your photos and the repair is carried out to exactly the areas the tester marked.

What does a chassis repair cost?

It depends entirely on how much corroded steel has to be removed and rebuilt. Photos plus the vehicle year, make and model are usually enough for an honest range.
